The complete works of Klaus Mollenhauer are to be published in a text critical and annotated hybrid edition, the *Klaus Mollenhauer Gesamtausgabe (KMG). Textkritische und kommentierte Edition* will be published. The goal is to include all of Mollenhauer's published writings, i.e. those published by publishing houses, in order to provide a complete representation of his publications. Translations and gray literature are also included, but annotated less extensively than published works. In addition to completeness, chronology is a guiding principle of the KMG. All works are reproduced in chronological order in order to trace the genesis of the work. Many of Mollenhauer's texts have seen several editions, all of which are reproduced here in the KMG. The earliest publication represents the respective guiding text. This approach also takes into account that some of Klaus Mollenhauer's important monographic works are based on essays that have been previously published in various places. The first edition is intended to shed light on these original connections in time and content, without negating the special nature of the compilation of essays in separate books. In addition to his own work, published interviews in which Klaus Mollenhauer is a participant are included in the KMG.
A second integral component of the KMG is to open and process Klaus Mollenhauer's estate so that it can be used for critical commentary in the KMG. The estate comprises a total of 25 folders of a) correspondence (mostly sorted alphabetically by correspondent), b) texts and manuscripts, and c) teaching materials, as well as ten boxes with further correspondence and teaching materials, documents on his activities at the university, excerpts and working materials, manuscripts and texts, some of them fragments, biographical materials on Mollenhauer, and texts on Mollenhauer. In addition, video and audio recordings of Mollenhauer (lectures, conversations) and several reels of films as well as supplementary materials from a research project from the archives of the Institute of Education Sciences can possibly be included.
The goal is to publish an edition that enables ("nicht entmündig[t]" [Sahle 2013, p. 344]) readers and researchers by making the texts available in as unaltered a form as possible. The accuracy of reproduction of the originals refers primarily to the content. Regarding the form of the texts, the guiding idea is that Mollenhauer's texts are generally not texts whose presentation is more important than the idea of a unifying ideal text (Sahle 2013, p. 217). Therefore, in recording the form of texts, we largely dispense with characteristics of typesetting, such as font and size.
The guiding principle for the edition is the documentation of Mollenhauer's work to make it accessible for further scholarly research and for study purposes through explanations and commentaries. Such being the case, the KMG corresponds to the idea of a documentary edition and archival edition attempting to offer texts close to the source without excessive intervention and prior interpretation (Sahle 2013, p. 218), but at the same time does not withhold editorial knowledge. Furthermore, Klaus Mollenhauer's estate offers to contribute to a deeper understanding of Klaus Mollenhauer's work. In this way, his work can be expanded to include texts previously largely or completely unknown texts that hold significance in the context of the other writings, as well as selected materials from the estate. Parallel to the preparation of the edition, the content of the works will be examined, and the results will be incorporated into the commentary. The edition meets various demands with displays enriched to varying degrees.
Preparing an edition using a TEI schema and XML-markup requires its own convention of speech and vocabulary.

Individual approaches to different formal issues:
Mollenhauer's work is characterized by the versatile use of images of artworks. Therefore, images are displayed as scans and, as far as possible, linked to a digital representation of the artwork, usually to the owning institution. In addition, Klaus Mollenhauer uses musical scores, especially in later works, these are also included.
Illustrations are reproduced as presented, color representations are only offered if the original was printed in color. If digital representations are available, they are offered as links. In addition, the illustrations receive a short description, making them identifiable or acting as a substitute in case of difficulties with presentation. Graphics are reproduced as scans; the words contained in the graphic are added as plain text so that they can be located using a full-text search.
The KMG pursues the goal of creating a critical complete edition, which includes the explanation of passages of the work. These are the instances where information is added 'from the outside' to serve the analysis of the content, facilitate understanding, and anticipate research work.
Quotations, paraphrases and references
Each work in the Klaus Mollenhauer Gesamtausgabe undergoes the following steps:
The comparison of editions for monographs (M) by Klaus Mollenhauer is first carried out as an exact "word for word" edition comparison using a ten-page excerpt.
If (a) discrepancies appear, an exact comparative reading of the entire
lead text monograph is made with the versions in question. If (b) no
discrepancies occurr, the remaining pages of the editions are checked by
comparing the first and last words of a double page spread. In addition,
a 1:1 check of every twentieth page is performed as a random sample.
When the comparison of editions is performed according to (b), selective
error checking is included as another safety loop. If errors are
detected during XML markup of the lead text, they are compared to later
editions to identify any revisions and corrections. Via this tiered
process, it is possible to both ensure an economical approach and ensure
that recensions and text changes are detected.
If (c) discrepancies appear in the various samples from (b), a 1:1 comparison reading of all editions is performed.
If (d) in one or more subsequent editions, the publisher indicates that it was an expanded, changed, or similar edition, a 1:1 comparison reading of the entire edition is performed.
Multiple editions of the same article in several editions are Proofread according to procedure (M).
The comparison of different publications of an essay (A) in anthologies, journals, or monographs is always performed as a word-by-word comparison.
First, the versions of the essays that occur in monographs or anthologies are proofread according to procedure (M). If they are anthologies, the ten-page text excerpt was based on an essay by Mollenhauer.
If (a) there are no differences between the texts, the lead text is compared with the other (first) editions of the monographs and, if necessary, other textual witnesses. This comparison follows the agreed-upon procedure for essays (A). Discrepancies are marked in the lead text.
If (b) discrepancies exist between texts, a 1:1 comparison reading is performed for the text units (essays, chapters) in which changes are noted, and the discrepancies are marked up in the lead text.
For the digital edition of the Mollenhauer's publications, all text corpora are marked up according to the TEI P5 guidelines, version 4.0.0.
For this purpose, an adapted metadata schema is developed iteratively for both the works and the estate of Klaus Mollenhauer.
In order to clarify questions off copyright and publishing law, the heiress, Susanna Mollenhauer, the publishers, co-authors have been asked for permission in advance. For the reprint of the correspondence, the relevant correspondents have been contacted.
Mrs. Mollenhauer has given permission for reprinting and republication of Klaus Mollenhauer's works in a complete edition. Likewise, all co-authors and co-editors have given their consent to the publication in the KMG. In terms of publishing law, there are no obstacles to the KMG, since there are no writings by Mollenhauer that, at the time of their publication in the KMG, have been published for the first time within the time limit of 20 years set by the Publishing Law (§ 2, para. 3).
